| Disclaimer: I am a relative newcomer to Stocks and Shares. I offer these pages, not as an expert, but as a way of sharing my experience. I believe that I can help other newcomers to understand this world, so often expressed either in impenetrable jargon or in endless verbiage. I can also guide them to sites that I found most useful. If you want investment advice, however, I suggest you approach those who hold themselves out to be experts, e.g., brokers, online or traditional. |

Shares-Information OnlineThe Internet provides a huge amount of information about stocks and shares. Want a 2-year, 5-year, 3-month, or whatever, chart of how a stock is doing? Go to Reuters Financial site (or Yahoo Financial site - see across) and type in the ticker name of the company. (Don't know the ticker name? All right, do a search on Reuter's or Yahoo Financial against the name of the Company to discover the ticker name). Want a comparison of that stock with other stocks? Type in the ticker names of the other stocks in the boxes provided for comparisons and, hey presto!, there you are. Want to know what stocks performed the best during the last year (or other period of time)? Go to Morningstar Stock QuickRank, and there you are! (This, however, is limited to American shares. For research on Irish shares go to the Irish Stock Exchange, or visit sites advertised on this page).
Your own Portfolio OnlineWith Yahoo Financial, Morningstar, and no doubt many other online services, you can create your own Portfolio of shares. This is a neat way of keeping up-to-date on the price movements of shares that you want to watch. Click onto your portfolio and you can see your chosen shares listed there, with their up to date prices. With a click of your mouse, you can see a chart. Example of Portfolio on Yahoo! You can have several Portfolios. You might like to have one portfolio for shares you intend to buy at some point in the future and another for the shares you already own; one for reliable shares like banks and leading companies, and another for speculative shares like exploration and start-ups; one for USA securities, another for EU securities, or whatever. In addition, you can, if you wish, key in the number of shares you buy or sell, with the price paid or received, and the online portfolio will then keep you informed on your profits and losses. If you like, you can use them to keep track of all your transactions. You can arrange to receive an Alert e-mail message whenever the price of a share changes suddenly. You can tailor these online portfolios to your own needs. To try out an Online Portfolio with Yahoo! Finance, go to:
